Direct-to-film printing puts your artwork on a transfer film, bonds it with adhesive powder and heat-presses it onto the garment. No screens, no color limits, no minimum per color— which is why it has become our answer for small runs, photographic art and orders that mix twelve garment types.

When DTF Is the Right Call
DTF is not a cheaper substitute for screen printing. It is the better answer to a specific set of jobs, and the wrong answer to others. Here is where it wins.
Runs under 50 pieces
Screen printing charges setup per color because a screen has to be burned for each one. DTF has no screens, so a 12-piece order costs what a 12-piece order should. This is the single most common reason we reach for it.
Full-color and photographic artwork
Gradients, drop shadows, photographs and illustrations with dozens of colors reproduce directly. On screens the same art would need color separations and a halftone conversion, and some of it simply cannot be held cleanly.
Several garment colors in one run
Each transfer carries its own white underbase, so the same design presses onto white, navy and heather without remixing ink or changing the setup. Useful when a team picks their own shirt color.
Mixed sizes in one order
Youth small through adult 4XL in a single run, with the design scaled per size rather than one film stretched across all of them.
Short deadlines
No screens to burn or reclaim, so production starts as soon as artwork is approved. When a date is tight, this is usually the method that makes it.
When screen printing wins instead
Above roughly 50 pieces of one design in one or two colors, screen printing is cheaper per shirt and the hand is softer on a heavy cotton tee. We will say so rather than run the job the easy way — see screen printing.
How a DTF Transfer Is Made
Direct-to-film starts as a print, not a screen. Your artwork is printed in reverse onto a clear PET film in full color, then a second pass lays a solid white underbase behind it — the layer that makes the design opaque on a black shirt instead of translucent.
While the ink is still wet, the film is coated in a hot-melt adhesive powder that sticks only to the printed areas. It goes through a curing unit that melts the powder into the ink and drives off the moisture, and the finished transfer comes out as a sheet you could stack on a shelf for months.
Pressing is the last step: the transfer is positioned on the garment and pressed at roughly 300°F for around fifteen seconds with firm, even pressure, then the film is peeled away. Every one of those steps happens on Enterprise Avenue, which is what lets us hold color from the first shirt to the last and re-run the same design a year later without a visible difference.
Fabrics DTF Works On
Cotton
Presses cleanly and holds color well. On a soft retail tee the print sits slightly on top of the fabric rather than sinking into it, which is the main visible difference from a water-based screen print.
Performance polyester
Where DTF genuinely outperforms screen printing. Dye migration — the garment’s own dye bleeding up into the print on hot polyester — is a constant fight with plastisol. The adhesive layer on a DTF transfer blocks it.
Poly-cotton and tri-blends
The most common blanks we press, and the most forgiving. Heather colors in particular look better under DTF than under a heavy plastisol print.
Fleece, hoodies and sweatshirts
Thicker fabric needs a firmer press and a slightly longer dwell so the adhesive reaches through the surface fibers. Worth specifying up front so the whole run is pressed to the same setting.
Bags, aprons and canvas
Flat, stable panels press well and take a larger design than a chest logo. Good for tote giveaways, event merch and aprons.
Where we would not use it
Anything with a waterproof or heavily coated shell, high-pile fleece, and garments whose care label will not take press heat. We check the blank before committing rather than finding out on the first piece.
Ordering DTF in Naples
We print and press at 4120 Enterprise Ave, Suite 103 in Naples, and deliver across Collier and Lee County — Marco Island, Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers and Cape Coral — with pickup at the shop whenever it suits.
The minimum is 12 pieces, and you can mix DTF with embroidery and screen printing in one order to reach a total. A dozen DTF staff shirts plus fifty screen printed event tees plus embroidered caps is one purchase order, one proof and one delivery.
Send vector artwork if you have it, but a high-resolution PNG with a transparent background works. Our design team can rebuild a logo from a photo or a business card if that is all you have. Standard turnaround is 7 to 10 business days after proof approval, and rush is quoted case by case.
DTF Printing FAQs
What is the minimum order for DTF printing?
Twelve pieces. You can combine DTF with embroidery and screen printing in the same order to reach a total, so a small DTF run can sit inside a larger program.
How long does a DTF print last?
Properly pressed, it outlasts the garment in normal use. Wash inside out in cold water and tumble dry low and it will hold through fifty-plus cycles. What kills a transfer is a press that was too cool or too brief, which is why we verify temperature and dwell on every run rather than trusting the dial.
Does DTF feel like a heavy plastic patch?
Not when it is done right. A modern DTF print is thin and flexible and stretches with the fabric. It has slightly more hand than a discharge or water-based screen print and slightly less than a heavy plastisol print with a white underbase.
Can you print white ink on dark shirts?
Yes, and that is one of the method’s strengths. Every transfer is printed with its own white underbase, so a full-color design is just as opaque on black as it is on white with no extra setup.
DTF or screen printing for my order?
Quantity and artwork decide it. Under fifty pieces, or artwork with photographs and gradients, or several garment colors in one run, and DTF is usually right. Above fifty pieces of a one or two color design, screen printing is cheaper per piece. Send the count and the art and we will tell you which, with a reason.
Can you print on garments I supply?
Usually yes. We check the fabric and the care label first, because coated shells and some technical fabrics will not take press heat, and we cannot replace customer-supplied blanks if a piece is damaged. For most jobs it is simpler and often cheaper for us to source the blanks.
What artwork do you need?
Vector files are best. A high-resolution PNG with a transparent background at roughly the size it will print is fine. If all you have is a photo of an old shirt, our design team can rebuild it. Every job gets a digital proof before anything is printed.
Do you deliver outside Naples?
Yes, across Collier and Lee County including Marco Island, Bonita Springs, Estero, Fort Myers and Cape Coral, with pickup available at our Enterprise Avenue facility.
